Multan is a city in the Punjab Province of Pakistan, and capital of Multan District. It is located in the southern part of the province, and is steeped in history. It has a population of over 3.8 million (according to 1998 census), making it the sixth largest city in Pakistan. It is built just east of the Chenab River, more or less in the geographic center of the country, and about 966 km from Karachi. Multan is known as the ‘City of Pirs and Shrines’, and is a prosperous city of bazaars, mosques, shrines and superbly designed tombs. The Multan International Airport connects to flights to major cities in Pakistan and to cities in the Persian Gulf.

The city’s industries include metalworking, flour, sugar, and oil milling, and the manufacture of textiles, fertilizer, soap, and glass. Multan is also known for its handicrafts, especially pottery and enamel work.

Multan City Of Courageous People

Multan was first visited by the Muslim arms during the reign of the Khalifa Abu Bekr, in 44 Hijri (664 A.D.), when Mohalib, the Arab General, afterwards an eminent commander in Persia and Arabia, penetrated to the ancient capital of the Maili. He returned with many prisoners of war. The expedition, however, seems to have been directed towards exploration of the country as no attempt was apparently made to retain the conquest.

Multan International Airport

The airport caters both International & Domestic flights. It is situated 4 km West of the city. Multan is also known as Madinat-ul-Auliya – مدینة الاؤلياء because of the large number of shrines and Sufi saints from the city. Naturally, the prime attractions are the mausoleums of Sufi saints. It is blanketed with bazaars, mosques, shrines, and ornate tombs. The city is famous for its handicrafts (carpets & ceramics) and cottage industries. Multan is also an important agricultural centre. Multan features an arid climate with very hot summers and mild winters. Local rickshaws and taxi cabs connect the airport to the city. A few moderate to cheap hotels are available. The Airport operates nonstop round the clock, 7 days a week.

Multan is a Historical city. Its History spread on centuries. Multan is Also Known as the city of “Garma, Gard, Gada and Goristan”. Multan fort is situated in the center of city. Multan Fort was built on a mound separating it from the city by the old bed of river Ravi. Its date cannot be fixed with accuracy.

Apart from the shrines, most of the fort was destroyed by the British in 1848-49 to avenge the death of Lieutenant Alexander vans Agnew, killed in Multan by order of the Sikh governor. Agnew’s memorial obelisk stands on a plinth at one of the highest points of the fort mound.

A panoramic view of Multan City can be had from the highest point in the fort. The Fort was originally known as Katochgarh and is attributed to have been built by the Katoch Dynasty.

The Maintenance Of the Archeology in The City 

The fort was notable both for its effectiveness as a defense installation and for its architecture. Contemporary reports put the walls of the fort at 40 to 70 feet (21 m) high and 6,800 feet (2 km) in circumference. The fort’s 46 bastions included two flanking towers at each of the four gates (the De, Sikki, Hareri, and Khizri Gates). A ditch 25 feet (7.6 m) deep and 40 feet (12 m) wide and an 18-foot (5.5 m) glacis protected the fort from intruders. Within the fort stood a citadel flanked by 30 towers, enclosing mosques, a Hindu temple, and a Khan’s palace. The citadel was severely damaged by the battering it got from the guns of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1818.

Dehli Gate

Delhi Gate is one of the historical gates in Multan. Delhi Gate, Multan is named as Delhi Gate because it faces towards Delhi-India, and its road leads towards Delhi. During Mughal Period whenever the Kings visited this place they usually entered through this gate.

Doulat gate

Doulat Gate is vanished in promptly days. Just the name is vivified & the spot where it was to be. It is believed that the Gate called “Doulat Gate”, in view of the Mazar of “Pir Doulat Shah” which is on the front of the Gate. The Mazar is still there and individuals come and pay visits. Bohar Gate

Bohar Gate is named as Bohar because at the outside of this gate there were many Bohar trees. Bohar Gate is one of the most famous gates in Multan.  The gate faced towards the River Ravi. When Multan was a busy River Port the gate was known as the main entrance for the Supply of Food and Communication. But now with the passage of time River Ravi had changed its way. Now there are many commercial centers built around the Bohar Gate.

One of the historical Gates in Multan is known as Pak Gate. The gate is known as “Pak” not because it is situated in Pakistan but because of the saint of Hazrat Musa Pak Shaheed. He was first buried in Uch Shareef near the grave of his father. But his followers have full faith on him and they bring his dead body there and buried him in Multan.   

The historical gate is named as “Lohari” because outside the region of this gate there are many Blacksmiths lived and they have their own workshops there.

Haram Gate is located in Multan and it is one of the historical gates in Multan. Haram Gate is placed on Akbar Road near Masjid Hafiz Luqman Wali, Multan, Pakistan.
